Research
To first start this project I needed the full scope to understand the needs of this specific client. Sarah's Hair Studio has been a long-time client for PSS and recently decided to have a sign to display the list of services with their corresponding prices. I still had a few questions, which I asked my boss about.
I learned a few key points:
~The sign was to be used indoors.
~This sign was to tell clients about the business services and to make the company policies clearer.
~Sarah gave us a photo of the specific wall in her building she wanted this sign to hang.
~She also specified that she wanted something "different to make it sparkle or shine".
From gathering this information, I was able to determine that the substrate of the sign would be PVC board and that the size would be about 2 feet by 2 feet (24" X 26"). There were many, many different colors of vinyl and some of which were stored away where I cannot always visibly see them. I was unsure about how to make the sign sparkle, so I discussed it with my boss. She told me that we could use metallic silver and gold colors for this, and as soon as she said that I felt that was the right option for this project.
Design
After knowing the information, I was able to start the design process right away. To reduce error and mistakes being made throughout the process, I started designing in the original size that would be needed to print. This would later be shrunk down to fit into the mockup. I finished the mockup by calculating the price of the materials and labor to give the client an accurate price. This was then sent for approval, and a few days later she gave us the green light.
Installation and Finishing Production
After receiving the approval, I printed the design onto clear vinyl and did not use a laminate due to the client's budget and the lack of necessity with an indoor sign. I then handed over all the pieces necessary to our vinyl installation expert, who squeegeed the metallic silver vinyl onto the PVC board. Then the print I just made was applied to the top, allowing the layers beneath to show through and shine!
Reflection
I learned more about PSS's available materials to sell to clients in this process, as well as finding ways to think outside the box when the client allowed me the freedom to do so. There was also a good amount of teamwork from my colleagues that I did not understand at the time, but looking back that is how we ended up with such a unique project.
