Research
This project was something different from all my other projects in my entire time working at PSS. My boss knew that I enjoyed to draw and that I was pretty good at it too, so she asked me if I would feel comfortable sketching pencil drawings of old buildings in the town of Edmeston, NY. She gave me a few images to reference, and the originals were partially damaged or faded to be on the banners. She told me that the final product would be various banners hung at the four entrances into town, some of which would be juxtaposed next to the building to which the banner is referring. The company gave me a sketchbook and pencils and I started sketching.
Design
After I finished all the sketches, I scanned each one and saved them onto the company computer. My boss then placed the images into her design templates, where she had already created the banners.
Installation and Finishing Production
My boss handled conversing with the client because they knew her very well, and I did the printing process for the banners. This banner vinyl was thicker and of a higher quality than other banners I had done previously. The thickness of the banner vinyl meant I needed to slightly adjust the head of the printer to be a little higher up than normal. Normally, when the banners are finished printing, I hem them using double-sided tape. However, since these were to fit pole pockets, and I had never done that before we had our installation specialist do that.
Reflection
This was by far one of the best projects I have ever been involved in. I felt so grateful and humble every time I saw the banners hanging up throughout the town. I loved working with the team on this project and feel fortunate that I was asked to be a part of it all. I learned so much history about the town of Edmeston in the process as well. One fact I learned, was that a building named Phoenix Cheese replaced the former Empire Cheese building after being burned down and began producing Philadelphia Cream Cheese to later merge with Kraft in 1928. Who knew that all occurred in such a small town as this? Moments like that were what made this one of the best jobs I have ever had to this day.
